A Cheerful Book Club in the Gloomy Atmosphere of the Second World War

For film lovers, who like watching period films and tracing the lives of civilians, who were alive during important dates in history, this film, The Guernsey Literary, and Potato Peel Pie Society will be a good choice. Although the Netflix movie comes before the audience with an absurd name, it makes quite its mark in terms of subject matter. Mike Newell is the director of this production, which attracts attention with its young cast. The main character of the story, Juliet Ashton, is played by Lily James. Dawsey Adams and Sidney Stark are played by Michiel Huisman and Matthew Goode respectively. Since the story takes place in the 1940s, the production team successfully transferred the unique clothes and traditional decor of that time to the movie set.

“I don’t need to tell you that. You already know what books can do.”

A Scenario to Warm Your Heart in the Challenging Pages of History

Adapted and based on a book by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer, the movie depicts the authoritarianism of German soldiers under Hitler on the British people after their invasion of England during World War II, from 1945 onwards. The security of people’s lives is in grave danger, not least because of food shortages. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society’s script quite intensely indicates how the people of the region, who are going through a troubled period, are looking for a breathing space or an event that can make them forget all these difficulties for a short time. Under these harsh and bleak conditions of war, a group from the local area, spontaneously form a reading club and creates a space where they can enjoy themselves.

The Story of a Group of People Taking Cover in Books in the Midst of War

This is where the story begins. Trying not to go into details in order not to give spoilers, the movie also shows the differences between the lives of the bourgeoisie of the time and the local farming people. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is presented to movie lovers as a meaningful work that the books and how reading can be good for the human soul even under difficult conditions such as war.
